BTCV is working with the West Indian Association in Oldham to develop a community garden in an outdoor area that is currently run-down, under used and neglected. The garden has become run down and vandalised. There is also a big litter problem.
The project involves women from an over 50s Afro-Caribbean ladies' group. They are taking part in gardening workshops aimed at giving them horticultural skills and knowledge, and other associated skills. Aspects of healthy living are also being introduced with food growing sessions and the exercise benefits of being outdoors and gardening.
Children from the Poinciana Education Project have been involved in the design and development of the garden. The end results are both a vibrant community resource and a group of local people who have developed the necessary skills and expertise to ensure the garden's ongoing care and maintenance.
