The memorial garden at St German's Church in Adamsdown in Cardiff was in urgent need of care and attention when Chaela Carrell of BTCV first met some of the congregation. Most of the congregation were too elderly to do heavy digging, so they and the priest, Father Roy Dixon, started by seeking to build community involvement in order to give the garden a bit of makeover.
Together they have run a series of fun events to help get the flowerbeds into shape and replanted. All were well attended with people from three to 60 years old. They brought their enthusiasm and BTCV provided advice on using tools and then garden maintenance to help keep things looking good after the main work had been done. Support came from other partners and the Cardiff Housing Association, the Adamsdown Resource Centre, and Adamsdown Forum have all helped make the church grounds and attractive area that has improved the image of the whole community.
