A group of adults with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour in Haringey have engaged in a range of horticultural activities in the wider community. They adopted a flowerbed in a local park, and have planted gooseberry bushes, spring bulbs shrubs, grown vegetables for a community café, planted trees in another park, and planted-up hanging baskets for a community and arts centre.
The project was a partnership between BTCV and a Day Centre managed by Haringey Council and came about when the local BTCV outreach worker approached the group. BTCV provide the skills on practical environmental work and Haringey Council provide support to members of the group. The group has also worked with Sixth Form pupils to develop an art project for Chestnuts Park in Tottenham.
The project provides an opportunity for group members to take exercise and to explore a wide range of skills. It also enables a potentially marginalised group to engage with the community in which they live.
The group have received a BTCV People's Places Award and appeared in the local newspaper. Their work is recognised and appreciated by other community groups working locally.
