Choosing your media

Metadata: Details

There are a great many 'media' these days, and choosing the right mix is important. Some are almost free; others are expensive, and may be inappropriate in any case.

A good starting point is to look for the ones that are free or low cost. A good press release may get your news into five local papers for the cost of some paper and a stamp (or even just an e-mail). Many local organisations will have paper or electronic newsletters: find out who has these, when they go out, who they go out to, and find out how you can get your information in. Some people will be happy for you to write an article; others will want to take your information and fit it in to their own style.

A basic printed leaflet or 'flyer' on coloured paper is often a good starting point for any local event: it's easy to produce and photocopy and can be stuck through letter boxes and in shop windows or sent out with mailings. Again keep it simple: make sure it says: 'who, what, where and when'.

However, you may want to step it up a little: you might want a logo for your group or a photo; you may want to go for colour printing and you may want a smart poster to highlight an important event. This is where skills and perhaps professional experience come in: if you are not confident about designing and have never completed a design role before, get some help. Your local CVS may be able to help or advise. If there's a local group who has excellent publicity ask them how they do it; you could also look for any local person who works as a designer and see if they're prepared to help in their local community.

Don't get too carried away: remember to keep within your resources and focused on who you are aiming at. And don't forget that the best medium is often word of mouth. In a small community this can be fast and free, but do be aware of who may be excluded.
