The garden can be any size you want, from some well planted containers or a colourful border, to one that includes all the previously mentioned elements. A typical garden design is shown below:

Points to remember:

  1. Plant taller shrubs and flowers at the back of your garden to provide shelter.
  2. Place log pile in the most shaded place in the garden.
  3. Include plants that will give a good show of flowers from spring to autumn.
  4. Consider what access you will require to the garden, and plan accordingly; stepping stones are useful when weeding.
  5. Your garden will take time to mature and during this period fill up bare patches with colourful annuals. If half-hardy annuals are used, sow them in seed trays initially and grow under protection before planting out.
