Many insects, especially butterflies, require warmth and shelter, and these conditions are met by siting your garden on a south facing slope or adjacent to a south facing wall, building, fence or hedge (if sited by a hedge, leave a one metre gap for hedge trimming).

As with most gardens, consider where your nearest source of water is for watering the plants in hot periods. This type of garden can be semi-formal in design and may be suitable as a showpiece for visitors.
