The following points should be taken into consideration when collecting seed:

  1. Collect and store seeds initially in hessian sacks or paper bags, never use polythene bags (the seed may rot).
  2. Do not collect seed in very damp weather, damp seed is difficult to store.
  3. Store seed in a cool, well ventilated room
  4. Good seed crops are often irregular with up to three or four years between successive crops.
  5. Some seeds may be sown immediately, others must be stored before sowing (see table).
  6. To help it germinate, some seed needs to be 'stratified' before sowing (see table for details). This involves mixing the seed with 3-4 times its own weight of sand and storing it in a clay flower pot sunk into the earth.
