Cut down grass and weeds. Mark out the beds and remove the turf with a sharp spade. Stack the removed turves close at hand. As these rot down, the fertile soil can be sieved and used for seed planting the following year. Dig over the site as for a vegetable plot, removing all perennial weeds. Digging should be done in the autumn to allow winter frosts to break up the soil. Fertilize the soil if necessary.
