  • Water plant well.
  • Dig out a hole as for pit planting but deeper and wider than the container.
  • Carefully remove the container. For rigid pots turn upside down and knock out the root ball. Polythene pots can be cut off with a knife.
  • Roots that have been growing around the base of the pot should be teased out.
  • Place the plant in the hole and fill in as described for pit planting. Some extra soil will be left over.
