  • >A spade is used to make a notch to a depth of about 15cm.
  • A second notch is made similarly at right angles to the first, to form a T.
  • The spade is pushed down to lever open the sod at either side of the first notch.
  • The roots of the young tree are inserted into the notch and spread out.
  • The spade is removed and the sod trodden down firmly so that the root collar of the tree is level with the ground.
  • Check that the tree is straight and firm with no roots showing. If roots are visible the tree is not deep enough and the process should be repeated.
