Most trees are planted during the dormant season between mid November and late March when they can be dug up and moved without harm. Root balled trees must also be planted within this period, while containerised trees can in theory be planted at any time of the year.

Trees have some root growth during the winter so it is advantageous if they can be planted in the earlier part of the season. This is particularly relevant to species which do not move well such as Silver Birch or Beech.

Trees should never be moved or planted if the soil is frozen.
