Training leads to two broad categories of qualification. The first is 'Qualified First Aider' and is achieved through an assessed First Aid at Work course. These usually take either four days or ten 3-hour evening or weekend sessions. The qualification needs renewal by assessment every three years. The second 'qualification' is obtained by attendance at a Basic or Emergency First Aid course which usually lasts up to one day and is not assessed. In deciding the correct level of provision the different degrees of risk present need to be assessed, but the following should be the minimum: - One Basic trained First Aider on all practical projects, training courses or any other event.
- One Qualified First Aider on all projects with significant levels of risk e.g. using machinery or on any project in remote areas or in difficult terrain, where contacting the emergency services would take time. If these services reliably could be contacted and be on site within approximately 20 minutes, you might not need to supply your own Qualified First Aider.
