It is difficult to generalise in a theoretical sense about the safe use of hand tools, since it requires a considerable degree of hands-on experience. Some guidance for specific tools is provided in Appendix 4. There are however a few basic principles to be aware of:

  • Only use the right tool for the job chisels are not screwdrivers, for example.
  • Use only tools in good condition reject tools with cracked or broken handles, or with burred or broken heads.
  • Keep edged tools sharp and store or transport with their blades (and your fingers) protected from damage when not in use.
  • Never use a tool in such a way that you or someone else will be injured if it slips.
  • Leaders, managers or supervisors must provide adequate instruction in safe tool use at the beginning of every project and must check understanding with individual volunteers throughout its duration.
