The use of trailers should be subject to the following operational requirements.

  • Drivers of vehicles towing trailers must have received adequate training and must have their ability to manoeuvre them correctly assessed.
  • Trailers must be maintained appropriately, according to the mileage they have undertaken and the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • People must not be carried in trailers.
  • Vehicles towing trailers are subject to speed restrictions: vehicles towing trailers cannot exceed 50 mph on ordinary roads or 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways; lower local limits, e.g. 30 mph, may apply to all vehicles on any of these roads.
