It is very difficult to lay down hard and fast rules governing these circumstances, but the following should be kept in mind:

  • Only in very special circumstances should volunteers be left to work alone; if this is unavoidable they must have transport available to them and preferably access to a portable phone or radio.
  • Chainsaw work, and use of other hazardous equipment, must not be undertaken alone.
  • In some circumstances, perhaps in more populated areas, personal alarms could be provided.
  • Volunteer groups working at some distance from a vehicle more than 500m is suggested must take special precautions and be made aware of the special dangers of the situation. Specific actions may include carrying blankets or other insulation for injured people.
