Hypothermia is an abnormally low body temperature induced by exposure to colder, wet weather. Avoid allowing people to get too cold and avoid exposed sites and projects in the cold where there is not much activity to keep the body warm. If hypothermia does occur, wrap up the person to keep warm and get them to hospital without delay. Precautions to take should include the following: - Check the weather forecast; include appropriate gear on the equipment list for the day.
- On exposed sites or in inclement weather make sure that blankets or similar are available; do not work long distances from the vehicle or base.
- Project leaders/supervisors must be aware of the danger and monitor the condition of volunteers regularly.
