In situations where volunteers use chemicals, the specific regulations governing their use, storage, transportation and disposal should be strictly adhered to. The basic guidance for volunteers using chemicals is listed below:

  • Volunteers should generally avoid work with chemicals labelled as dangerous (toxic, etc. see above) and with pesticides, fungicides or herbicides.
  • Where volunteers do use chemicals they must be provided with the COSHH assessment and adequate training to handle them safely.
  • Drivers of vehicles carrying chemicals must have safety information and procedures to apply if problems arise, including access to a suitable fire extinguisher.
  • No COSHH labelled substance should be carried in a closed cab with people.
  • Containers should be clearly marked.
  • Attention must be paid to the safe disposal of surplus chemicals. They should not be burned or poured down drains if in doubt contact the Environment Agency.
