When considering precautions there is a sequence of priorities to take into account. For instance you must:

  • Eliminate the hazard entirely if possible
  • Consider altering the activity so that lesser hazards are presented
  • Minimise the risk level by specifying safe practice, giving safety information and training
  • Use suitable personal protective clothing

The communication of assessments is extremely important; they must be available to the people who are working in the field. It is an important responsibility of the group leader to brief all the volunteers on the assessment, the risks found and precautions needed before work begins.

There are obvious merits in tackling risk assessments in co-operation as a group. It helps to share both the burdens of making the initial risk assessments and the precautions which will help people to remain safe.
