Basic maintenance is another job for the tools organiser to sort out. They should try and get a few people together to help them with this if there's room in the tool store. The BTCV manual "Tool Care" is the place to start. The leaflet "Hand Tools", should also be read in connection with this section. At the very least, all tools should be regularly cleaned. Cutting tools of all types should be sharpened frequently, both before the work starts and during use. Cutting blades should be oiled and replaced as necessary and wooden handles should be treated with linseed oil. It is good practice to mark your tools clearly, by painting, etching or stamping, especially if you work alongside other conservation groups. All content copyright © 1986-2008 BTCV Ltd.
