Whatever you do, you will usually need tools. You can start by borrowing them from volunteers or clients but pretty soon you're going to realise this is not the best way forward - probably at the moment when someone breaks a borrowed implement. BTCV offices, other local conservation groups, local authorities or your local wildlife trust may also be able to help at this early stage, by lending tools for those initial projects. This may be particularly helpful if you need a specialised tool. Building a stock of your own tools is a long-term project, and those tools are an investment in the future of the group. The existence of such a stock of tools helps create an identity for the group and may well help the group grow and develop. The overwhelming reason though, is convenience. They are your tools, ready and available when the group wants to use them, assuming of course that they are well looked after. Cardiff Conservation Volunteers appealed in the local newspaper for unwanted tools and got a very good response. All content copyright © 1986-2008 BTCV Ltd. Registered charity No. 261009 |
