Perform a risk assessment of the work and the site. (See Health and Safety for more information.) Ensure you know the work and site and can bring adequate and correct tools for the job. Assess the volunteers, especially new ones and experienced ones whom you can count on for assistance in training. Make sure the first aid kit is clearly marked and located, and ensure that a vehicle is placed to get off site quickly in an emergency. Check that the person doing the tools and safety talk, if someone other than yourself, is on site and prepared. Lastly, make sure that the refreshments and stove are on site. The Sutton Conservation Volunteers have a very useful Tools In - Tools out sheet, permitting the leader or tools officer to keep a simple tally of which tools are in use. If it's the first day on a new site, then make the time to go around the work area and take photographs. These give you the 'before' view to be compared with ones taken at the end of the project.
