This may sound like the most straightforward section in the whole guide, but spending money can become a big problem for groups. To avoid this there are two areas to think about. BudgetingAvoid just going out and spending money. Think what it will be needed for and plan accordingly, ideally for the whole year ahead. Some of this will be fairly straightforward. You know how much your insurance will cost and when it is due, if you have to hire a room you can budget that in, and add in the costs of stamps and printing for your newsletter, and so on. For small groups, this advice may seem irrelevant. "If we seem to be running out of money then we raise some," is a common statement, but running out of money can cause problems and bad feeling. If you are going to adopt an action plan for the group, (see Running a Group ), then you should also try and work out how much it is going to cost to make that plan work.
