Much of this guide so far has been about getting things going, looking at planning new projects, working with people and making sure everything you do is likely to work. This section looks beyond that at how you can ensure that the work you're doing with local people leads to genuine change in the long term.

It looks at three important areas:

  • Capacity building - helping local people to be more effective;
  • Forming a permanent group - ensuring that local people can work together for longer than the immediate project; and
  • Community development - developing an integrated programme that will help communities change themselves and their surroundings.

It may be that the groups with whom you are working are already organised, but if they're not, then helping them get that way could be one of the most important outcomes of your work.
