A lot of recent legislation, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 for example, is very specific in requiring assessments of risk to be undertaken. Since January 1993 the Management of Health and Safety Regulations has required a risk assessment to be carried out for every work activity. Where there are five or more employees this assessment must be recorded and be part of material supporting the organisation's health and safety policy. The basic principle of risk assessment underpins the whole current approach to health and safety management, so it is vital that it is properly understood by organisations working with volunteers. If you want to learn more about how to do risk assessments, BTCV has produced a learning resource pack which is available from BTCV Enterprises on 01302 572200.
