Billions of pounds every year are spent around the world on advertising and publicity. Why? Because it works.

This kind of work does not need to be extensive or expensive, but you do need to be clear about what you are trying to achieve. Three main reasons for doing publicity are outlined below.

Recruiting new volunteers

Your publicity should aim to:

  • Let people know you exist.
  • Show people that taking part in your activities is easy, fun, safe, satisfying and benefits their environment.
  • Encourage them to get involved and give them the information they need to do so.

Raising money

Groups need money for tools, training, transport and also for newsletters, meeting rooms and many other things. Your publicity - both what you produce and what gets reported in the local press - should always reflect this and be designed to encourage those who may never come out with you and get their hands dirty to support you financially.

Raising awareness

You want people to know what you are doing, why you are doing it and why it needs to be done. This can help create positive support for conservation work and may also help you find new projects.
