BTCV has over 40 years' experience of practical conservation, and is one of the leading providers of training in practical conservation skills. Training is an important part of every BTCV activity, whether run locally or through the national 'Natural Breaks' programme. Learning whilst doing has always been an important concept for BTCV, and all BTCV activities include a training element.

In addition, specialist courses in fencing and many other skills are available. Experience and training in practical conservation skills, including fencing, gained through BTCV can lead towards the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) or Scottish Vocational Qualification in Environmental Conservation.
